The dome shaped volume rises from a pressed glass vintage base. Three coats of porcelain slip provide a blank canvas for decorating. Leafy ripe strawberries and flowers are hand painted with underglazes on the leather-hard clay then outlined by carving through the decorative layers to the dark clay beneath, a technique known as sgraffito. After the first firing the whole teapot gets a dip in a glossy clear food safe glaze. It is then fired to 2163 F resulting in a vitreous dense clay that is durable and chip resistant.
